According to a study published in the European journal Diabetologia in July 2014, increased physical activity and decreased sitting not only helps people lose weight, but it can prevent obesity and decrease the risk of weight-related diseases. In fact, people who have a sedentary lifestyle and are not physically active are four times more likely to become obese than people who have opposite lifestyles, the study reported.
The study consisted of evaluating data related to physical activity and sitting time for 3,670 people between the years 1997 and 1999. The results showed strong evidence that the participants with low activity had a tendency to gain more weight at a rapid pace than those who had less leisure time and more physical activity.
Benefits of Increased Activity and Less Sitting
Increasing your physical activity and decreasing your sitting leads to a number of benefits, including reducing the odds of obesity. Other benefits include:
Higher energy levels. Study participants who disclosed having physical activity on a regular basis and a less sedentary lifestyle reported having more energy than those who had sedentary habits.
Reducing obesity-related conditions. The study also revealed that those who had a more active lifestyle were able to reduce their risk of — or even prevent — obesity-related conditions, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, cardiovascular conditions, diabetes, and even some forms of cancer.
Better post lap band recovery. After lap band surgery, a combination of diet and exercise, including sitting less and being more physically active, is beneficial for optimal long-term results.
Increasing your physical activity is an ideal way to support weight loss and weight maintenance efforts, both before and post lap band surgery.
