Dr. Bagnato is a general surgeon based in Macon, Georgia, who specializes in bariatric surgery for residents of south Atlanta and surrounding areas. He has been performing bariatric surgeries since 2002 and has helped thousands of patients achieve long-lasting weight loss.
Dr. John Bagnato received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Mississippi in 1978 and his medical degree (MD) from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine four years later. He completed his surgical residency at University Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1987 and has been a board-certified surgeon since 1988.
In 1989, Dr. Bagnato performed the first laparoscopic gallbladder surgery in Mississippi and has been a pioneer in advancing minimally invasive surgical techniques ever since. He was the first surgeon in the world to remove a portion of the lung using thoracoscopy and the endo GIA stapler device.
He also developed a thoracoscope with Olympus and patented a unique technique for tying sutures inside the body during laparoscopy procedures.
Dr. Bagnato has worked with major surgical equipment manufacturers, including US Surgical, Wolf, and Olympus, to develop new surgical tools and techniques. He has taught courses in laparoscopic surgery at Mississippi hospitals and trained over two thousand surgeons from the US and Italy in these procedures. He has also lectured around the US and Europe as part of continuing medical education courses and medical society meetings and performed surgical procedures for teaching purposes in Italy.
With his experience in innovative laparoscopic techniques, Dr. Bagnato recognized and embraced the advantages of gastric sleeve surgery as a safe and cost-effective bariatric surgery. To date, he has performed over 5,000 bariatric surgeries, continuously improving some aspects of the surgery to make the procedure more efficient and affordable for his patients.
