Understanding Acid Reflux and Heartburn
Heartburn doesn’t actually have anything to do with the heart. When digestive juices from the stomach backwash into the esophagus, it causes irritation and inflammation, resulting in pain that we often feel close to our chest. This regurgitation often leaves a sour and unpleasant taste in the mouth. The stinging and lingering pain is referred to as heartburn.
Additional symptoms of acid reflux disease include:
- Bloating
- Burping
- Trouble swallowing due to a narrowing of the esophagus, a condition called dysphagia
- Hiccups
- Nausea
- Unexpected weight loss
- Wheezing
- Chronic sore throat
- Hoarseness
- Dry cough
- Asthma
When any combination of the above symptoms develops two or more times every week, then you may have acid reflux disease. In severe cases, chronic acid reflux can cause bloody or black stool, as well as bloody vomit. If these symptoms develop, it is important to contact a physician immediately to confirm their cause.
