Study: Weight loss surgery helps kidney disease patients

Study: Weight loss surgery helps kidney disease patientsThe benefits of weight loss surgery outweigh the risk of complications for clinically obese people who suffer from chronic kidney disease, according to the recently released findings of a new study. The researchers studied the results of weight loss surgeries performed on more than 27,000 people between 2006 and 2008. According to the results of this study, surgery for weight loss in Columbus may be a viable option for those who struggle with obesity and are in need of a kidney transplant.

According to this recent research, which will be published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, kidney disease patients can get extremely important benefits from weight loss surgery. Doctors use weight as a criterion to determine who can get lifesaving kidney transplants, and obesity can be a factor that doctors use to bypass a patient and pick another one to receive a new kidney. Obesity also makes it increasingly hard to exercise, impairing the ability of patients with chronic kidney disease to lose weight.

The researchers concluded that the rate of kidney disease patients who experience complications after weight loss surgery – between 5 percent and 10 percent – does not outweigh the benefits of it. The severity of kidney patients’ disease affected their chances of experiencing complications from weight loss surgery. Those with stage 5 kidney disease, marking an advanced form of it, had a complications rate of nearly 10 percent. By contrast, about 5 percent of patients with an early stage 1 form of kidney disease or completely normal kidney function had complications.

The authors of the study concluded that those complication rates of less than 10 percent make weight loss surgery a safe option for people experiencing both obesity and kidney failure. The doctors said that more research needs to be done to determine the precise degree by which the benefits of this procedure outweigh the risks.
